MR. JON SHENFINE | Consultant Surgeon
Jon specialises in upper gastrointestinal surgery and advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, with surgical interests in weight loss (bariatric), oesophageal and gastric cancer, acid-reflux disorders, anti-reflux surgery, along with surgery for hernia and gallstones.
Originally from England, he graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1993. He fell in love with Australia in 1991 when, as a student doctor, he went to Townsville on a medical elective. Jon soon became interested in oesophago-gastric disease and as a result spent three years in full time research studying patients with oesophageal cancer, leading to the award of Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Thereafter, he undertook six years of surgical training, based in hospitals in the North East of England, to become a general and oesophago-gastric surgeon. During this time he discovered there was a surgical registrar exchange program between Newcastle and Victoria, Australia. Jon was lucky enough to attain this spot, and so he spent six months of his surgical training in Sale, Gippsland and then a further six months at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne. He knew that he wanted to return to Australia, so after completing his training, he secured a surgical fellowship for a year in advanced laparoscopic and upper gastrointestinal surgery at the Upper GI and Soft Tissue Unit at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, an internationally renowned unit and world leader in upper GI surgery.
Being a Brit, he had to return to the UK, but there he was appointed to an amazing job as consultant surgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newscastle, UK, in 2008. The RVI is the largest Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Centre in the United Kingdom and has a national and international reputation for clinical work and research. Jon was one of only five surgeons that performed oesophageal and gastric cancer surgery in Newcastle.
Years later in 2010, after receiving a phone call from one of his surgical mentors informing him there was a job in Adelaide suited to his skills…and personality! Jon came to move here to SA, accepting a position as Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He has since transferred his role in public hospital to Flinders Medical Centre.
He has an international reputation for research in upper gastrointestinal surgery and is a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide, Flinders University & Edinburgh University. He speaks internationally on upper gastrointestinal surgery and helped to set up an Oesophageal Cancer Awareness campaign in the UK.
But, more than that, Jon cares deeply for his patients. And with a terrific sense of humour, he's always up for a laugh...mostly at his own jokes! You will most definitely take a liking to Jon from the moment you meet him.
